St Lazarus School

This is a rather remarkable school in one of Africa's largest slums, Kibera, in Nairobi.
The school provides both nutrition and education for disadvantaged children in the Kibera slum. For most of these children the food they get at school is all the food they get.  There are currently 120 children at the school, with a headmistress and four teachers.

The Kibera slum of Nairobi is the largest slum (in terms of population) in sub-Saharan Africa. According to Alioune Badiane, the director of the UN Human Settlements Program: "It has 3,000 persons per hectare; I do not see any other place in the world that has such a density". Kibera has more than 1.2 million people in an area about the size of Manhattan's Central Park (~ 2.5 square kilometers = ~ 600 acres). More than 25% of the population of Kibera has been diagnosed with AIDS, and most of the residents live in an atmosphere of despair and severe deprivation. Many of the children are orphans at an early age due to AIDS and other diseases. More than 50% of the population is under the age of 15, and approximately 80% of all youth are unemployed.

The school is currently looking for funds to allow another 20 children to join the school. And they have many things they are hoping to buy in the near future.

It costs the school $12.50 a month to feed one child with 2 meals a day for 5 days a week. So even such a small amount really can make a big difference here in Kibera. Currently the school is setting up a school feeding programme, however we are in dire need of funding to continue this project.

In March 2010 the Tribes Foundation sent a donation to help the school feeding programme, as this programme really needs support.

St. Lazarus's Wish List

  • $3200 to buy an area next to the school which can be made into a safe play area for the children.
  • $900 to cement a floor and put decent windows into one school room.
  • Thirty desks are needed, at a cost of $23 each. Total $690.
  • $3400 is wanted to get clean water to the school
  • They would also love elecrticity ...
